The Post-Humans series is a story that is still growing and developing as I write.
The series begins with a character named Athan Harper who has the ability to step into the minds of any normal human being and experience their subconscious and an alternate dimensional landscape where he is the lone visitor. The world of the Post-Humans is based in and around the Australian state of Victoria where I have grown up and lived most of my life. Some of the locations where the story takes place are some where I have spent some time. The idea is that in the near future the government will admit to the authorities that there are humans that have extraordinary abilities living among us. They of course think that this is a new stage of evolutionary development, but what they fail to realise is that unusual and special humans have been live amongst us since the dawn of humanities creation. |
The Post-Humans: The League- Gemini Rising- The Black Sydicate-After the Fall?
Athan Harper He is of course our man character, but as he learns more about world and it's secrets, the reader becomes entangled in the stories of many of these special people that just want to find their place in society. Athan has the ability step into the subconscious landscape that lies within or beyond the minds of normal human beings. This is an alternate dimension where he is able to travel from one human mind to the next. Athan Harper begins to share his role of the main character with his nemesis in the second and third books...but we won't spoil that just yet. Jack Lorde: This is a side story that begins after the first book and concludes at a point during the second. So if you are following the series in chronological order this is the second. This book introduces an Indianna Jones type character named John (Jack) Lorde. He is sent from the infamous Ledbrook College in London to explore the strange migration of dark creatures to the city of Melbourne. This is where he meets the curious student and supernatural enthusiast Eli Eliot. Together the encounter the aftermath of Jack's old adversary. What they don't realise is that the strange occurrences are linked to other goings on in the city (The Post-Humans series). Deadfall: This is the backstory that I just had to write. Cynthia Abell (Deadfall) is a struggling artist in the city of Melbourne, though painting is only her day job. She and Matthew Claire work for one of Melbourne's more mysterious gangsters. With Cynthia's deadly Post-Human ability and Mat's passion for being an amateur detective they are the shadowy right hand of the criminal kingpin. But there is a new player on the streets of Melbourne and Cynthia and Mat find themselves in the crosshairs. Cal: This will be my only illustrated comic so far based on the Post-Human universe. This story will be a short narrative about what happens to Terrance Floyd (Cal) after the conclusion of The League. The ex-member of The League had been converted to fight for the enemy, but after his immolation at the fiery hands of Furnace his path becomes even darker. His miraculous survival is only due to his ability to reshape and reenforce his bones, he slowly becomes a slave to his ability and becomes more monster than man. He also finds someone familiar in the dark and violent world beneath the city of Melbourne. |
The Post-Humans series had originated at least two years before I commenced writing the stories.
I originally had been writing and illustrating a post-apocalyptic comic called We Survive, set in country Victoria. The idea was that Australian society had spread out from the cities in search of food and water after an complete economic crash. I think I had taken this comic about forty pages in before I decided that I wasn't happy with the drawings and that the story was a little vague in some places (I think I will go back write it as a book, because it had some cool concepts). When I had a break from We Survive I began drawing a new comic set in our current era. Originally the story was going to be something more realistic based on myself as the main character. The idea was that it would be a story about me if I hadn't made some of the better choices I have made in my life. Where would I be? This changed after about two pages. I just couldn't stick to a straight forward story line, I needed to incorporate some element of fantasy to the mix. Within a page or two my main character became a depressed alcoholic who hid from his ability to see creatures from an alternate dimension living among us. The story then turned into a flashback of my own youth where it became mix of personal and surreal. After a few pages though I just didn't know where to take it from there and it died. But it revived in mid 2013 when author Ben Langdon and I opened an Art and Writing studio in our town. I began with reviving this comic concept and the main character. I just loved the idea of a guy that experiences the whole adventure in a suit. I am a big fan of getting dressed up in a suit an tie when I have the excuse. And so Athan Harper was born. Originally writing was just a way to plan out the story of the comic before planning out the illustrated frames, but I just kept going. After a few thousand words I decided to make the book. In the future I hope to illustrate a Post-Humans side comic, but for now I find it faster to write. |
